How the ‘Great British Biscotti Co.’ Reinvented the Biscotti
Over the last few years, the Great British Biscotti Co. has proudly rekindled the fortunes of the humble biscotti. Biscotti first arrived on our shores some two thousand years ago in the knapsacks of invading Roman legionnaires.
Originally a durable energy provider for famished foot soldiers, biscotti has slowly evolved to become the perfectly proportioned accompaniment to the array of Italian inspired coffees now available.
Since Great British Biscotti’s launch in 2017, Dorset’s finest artisan bakery has been nudging the standards of biscotti upwards.
Where once only almond-orientated offerings existed, there are now an array of deliciously decadent sweet and savoury marriages of flavour, including: Chocolate Orange and White Chocolate; Cranberries and Pistachio; Cheddar and Fennel; and Sun-dried Tomato and Olives.
It was Paul and his team that created the first UK centric biscotti (Honey, Ginger & Lemon), following a North American tribute range (for export) which included: Pumpkin Pie, Pecan Pie, Spiced Apple Crumble and Banoffee Pie.
In 2020, Paul and his team created two ‘ahead of the curve,’ plant based lines, with compostable packaging: Dark Belgian Chocolate & Cranberries; and Almond, Hazelnut and a hint of Orange.
“We live in an age where The British Craft Food movement is growing like never before, a foodie renaissance born from an insatiable craving for best-in-class ingredients, constant innovation and recipe integrity. As an ambitious specialist bakery in Dorset, we’re proud to respond to the growing concerns of deserving food minorities, (vegans and coeliacs) whose calls for more tailored recipe decks should never result in having to settle for underwhelming flavours and textures. As for compostable packaging, we believe everyone has a responsibility to reduce their litter trail and leave the planet as they found it.“Paul Rostand, Founder of Great British Biscotti Co
The young business’ No. 1 success has been taking biscotti into the savoury arena, with: Cheddar and Fennel, Jalapeno and Cheddar as well as Chorizo and Cheddar.
Such has been the success of this ‘revamping biscotti’ project that Dorset’s specialist bakery is taking orders from all corners of the world, even Italy.
They are stocked in quite a few places, including: Not On The High Street, John Lewis Stores, Amazon, Hotel Chocolat, The National Trust and a Nationwide network of independent delis, cafes, food halls & farm shops (+1200).
In 2019, Paul and his team also created a second upmarket Biscotti brand, The Artful Baker whose focus is solely on major supermarkets (Ocado & Asda).
Great British Biscotti Co. have won a number of awards, including:
- The FSB Small Business Awards (SW Food & Drink) 2020
- The Bakery Industry Awards (BIA) – Customer Focus award 2019
- The Q Awards – Product Excellence/savoury biscuits 2018
