Welsh Kombucha Brand Scoops Gold In Great Taste Awards

Blighty Booch‘s Organic Ginger Kombucha has been awarded 3-stars – the highest accolade at the prestigious Great Taste Awards.

Mark Pavey and Alana Tyson of Conwy Kombucha Ltd launched Blighty Booch and Blighty Brew Organic products in 2019.

Mark was inspired to produce Kombucha following a trip to Canada where he tried it for the first time. He was fascinated by the taste, various health benefits and complex production process of Kombucha, also known as ‘Booch.’

The fermented wonder drink is the fastest-growing market in the functional beverage industry at the moment, and is projected to be worth a global value of $6.2 billion by 2026.

Prior to founding the business, Mark, a town councillor, spent ten years as a music manager and record company owner representing the likes of Davy Graham, Beverley Martyn, Laike and Duck Baker.

Alana, a Welsh-Canadian artist has exhibited her work across Europe and has recently collaborated with fellow North Wales based artist, Elly Stringer to create the artwork for the Blighty Booth brand.

Blighty Booch’s range of Organic Kombucha includes an array of interesting flavours: Ginger, Nettle, Rosehip, Cherry and Original. The product that left a lasting impression on the judges this year was the Organic Ginger Kombucha which won a 3-star rating, which only 1.6% of the 205 entrants achieved.

The judges included notable chefs, cookery writers, food critics, restaurateurs and fine food retailers. They described the Organic Ginger Kombucha as a “fine example of what Kombucha should be.”

They agreed that the beverage provides a “wonderfully balanced combination of heat from the ginger, astringency from the tea and a delicate fruitiness.”

Following their success, Mark said:

“We’re absolutely delighted to win three Gold Stars for our Blighty Booch Organic Ginger, especially as it’s the first time we have ever entered the awards. We take great care in making the highest quality Kombucha, blending in small, slow batches the finest organic whole leaf and bud tea we have sourced from the high mountains of Hunan China. We are lucky to have our beautiful Welsh water, organic Brazilian sugar and live heirloom Kombucha culture to add to it.”

Blighty Booth has been well received in independent cafes and food shops across Wales, they now aim to be stocked nationally across the UK.

They also contribute to Aberystwyth University’s Future Foods Programme, who are investigating the beneficial health-giving and wellness properties of Kombucha and other functional foods in humans.

Blighty Booch’s award-winning Organic Ginger Kombucha will be considered for a Great Taste Golden Fork Award, which recognises the best of the best regionally and internationally, later this year.

The product is registered with the Vegan Society, and is suitable for Vegans and for Coeliacs. It costs £38 for a case of 12 x 330ml bottles and is available from health food shops, delis and farm shops and online from www.blightybooch.com.
