Scottish Blanket Company, The Tartan Blanket Co. – Donates Over 60k To Charity

Best known for their sustainable wool blankets and scarves, sustainable Scottish lifestyle brand, The Tartan Blanket Co. – committed to donating over £60k to charities in 2020.

2020 was a record year for The Tartan Blanket Co., and their donations went to the NAACP, The Trussell Trust and Cool Earth.

The family-run business, based in Leith, Edinburgh, launched its ‘Positive Impact Pledge,’ in 2020, committing to donating 1% of each sale to humanitarian charities, and a further 1% to environmental causes, as well as focusing on developing sustainable and ethical practices throughout the business.

TBCo.’s ‘Positive Impact Pledge’ was introduced after husband-and-wife founders, Emma and Fergus Macdonald, decided to prioritise The Tartan Blanket Co.’s positive impact on people and the world around them.

Emma Macdonald said: “The Tartan Blanket Co. has always been a brand focused on sharing warmth, not just to our local communities but to the world around us. Donating 2% of each sale to people and environmental charities means that we can have a positive impact on the planet and those in need – and the more we grow, the bigger that impact becomes.“

The Tartan Blanket Co. truly has sustainability built in to the very core of its ethos, with the company regularly spending time investigating the footprint they are leaving on the planet.

Emma continued: “As a family-run business, we’re very aware of the future we’re leaving for our children. It wasn’t enough to just neutralise our environmental impact; The Tartan Blanket Co. are dedicated to creating a positive handprint and leaving a little more love in our wake.“

One of the environmental charities TBCo. donated to in 2020, was Cool Earth, an organisation which works with rain forest communities to stop deforestation and the impact it has on climate change.

Magda Pieta, Business Development Coordinator at Cool Earth said: “It’s supporters like The Tartan Blanket Co. that ensure Cool Earth continues to develop, share and scale-up the best ways to protect the rainforest through community-led conversation. This is an incredibly challenging time for international charities, and the donation TBCo. gifted is particularly welcome.”

There isn’t far to travel from farm to mill for TBCo.’s scarves and blankets, reducing the carbon footprint associated with their logistics operation(s). The Tartan Blanket Co. has also avoided air freight and opted for the slower, but significantly more sustainable, sea freight travel.

Born in 2015, the Tartan Blanket Co. came about thanks to married couple Emma and Fergus Macdonald, who back in 2014, – were living and working in London, but they had their heart firmly anchored back in their hometown of Edinburgh.

The couple spent many nights talking about their dreams to start their own business, and what that might look like, and following their wedding, they decided to take a leap of faith and start their own business together.

From there, the Tartan Blanket Co. was born, from the couple’s determination and their desire to create a company with real passion and real soul, offering beautiful and natural products which brings warmth to people’s hearts and homes, whilst still having a positive impact on the planet.

And with Fergus’ background in business, and experience in the highland-wear industry, and Emma’s background in fashion buying and merchandising, the pair saw an opportunity to bring a modern approach to one of our favourite Scottish products: the tartan blanket.
