Two Drifters (The UK Sustainable Rum Start-up) Has Rebranded
Two Drifters (“the world’s most sustainable rum”) has rebranded, – with a new look, lighter bottles, lower emissions, AND a new, sustainable merchandise range.
Two Drifters Distillery is the world’s FIRST EVER carbon negative distillery. Their new rebrand promises to give “more than just a nod” to the brand’s eco-friendly ethos. Their new, lighter (and British-made) bottles now feature a natural cork with an FSC-wooden top, a 100% compostable tamper seal, paper labels made from 95% sugarcane fibre, 5% hemp, and linen with a plant-based adhesive.
The four-strong range includes:
- Signature Rum: full-bodied and buttery, with rich notes of treacle, toffee, ginger and Muscovado sugar,
- Pure White Rum: crisp and clean with fresh notes of vanilla, apple, white pepper, and lime zest,
- Over-proof Spiced Pineapple Rum: rich and fruity with irresistible notes of ripe pineapple, salted caramel and crème brûlée,
- And the Lightly Spiced Rum: a warming and aromatic spirit boasting notes of vanilla, chai tea, toffee apple and delicate clove.
The bottles include eye-catching colours (hues of bright green, orange, and blue), with an illustration of a boat that pays homage to the company’s Devonshire roots. On top of this, Two Drifters have also launched a low carbon emission website, with a dedicated educational section on CO2 emissions.
To date, the Two Drifters Distillery has avoided a whopping 35.29 tonnes of CO2, whilst removing a hefty 16.72 tonnes. Most of the effort that goes into achieving their carbon negative footprint is on avoidance, rather than on removal (removal is expensive, so it’s better to avoid creating it in the first place, and remove what can’t be avoided (e.g. CO2 from suppliers).
Determined to solidify their position as “the world’s most sustainable rum,” their carbon-neutral e-commerce site is also home to Two Drifters merchandise, too (which is made to order by tee-mill in their factory powered by 100% renewable energy). The t-shirts are 100% recyclable.
Two Drifters was launched by a husband-and-wife duo, named Russ and Gemma Wakeham. Russ has a PhD in Organic Chemistry (from Bath University), and he spent many years working on carbon capture and utilisation technologies. Since launching in late 2019, Two Distillers have received an overwhelming response for their British rum. Their expansive warehouse now produces over 2,000 bottles per week.
“In October 2020, we started our first crowd funding campaign, and we were astonished with the 190% funding we achieved. Until then, we knew how to make great rum with sustainability at the core of our business, but we didn’t have the skills/budget to make the bottle as fascinating. So, these beautiful bottles have been a labour of love for six months and we could not be prouder. Bright, vibrant, fun and genuinely sustainable – our packaging now embodies the ethos and values of Two Drifters Distillery,” said Gemma Wakeham.
Two Drifters is available to buy on their website, and in John Lewis, Master of Malt, Virgin Wines, Spirits Kiosk, Drink Finder, and Hibana.
