Meet Farah Qureshi: The Ethical Jewellery + Cutlery Designer

Farah Qureshi is an ethical jewellery and a conceptual cutlery designer, who works from a studio and showroom in London, with a Fairtrade gold licence to boast.

Farah has been interested in art since she was a child: she completed a degree in three dimensional design and metalwork at art school, and she’s been making jewellery ever since. In 2009 (after experiencing cutbacks as a jewellery and art teacher), Farah began to focus on building her design-led business, instead.

In recent years, Farah’s jewellery has been sold both nationally and internationally, and she’s won many awards. During the pandemic, she began to sell her designs locally (in London). She also makes jewellery to commission, too.

Farah’s jewellery collections are created in silver and gold, and recycled materials are used along with Fairtrade gold.  During the pandemic, she decided to branch out to conceptual cutlery, – made in silver. The pieces include(s) spoons, forks, and knives (which are being showcased at an upcoming exhibition called ‘Implements’).

“Ethics and sustainability are at the heart of my business,” said Farah.

Between the 15th November-31st December 2021, Farah will be showcasing her new range of conceptual cutlery pieces at her first ever solo exhibition at the Watermans Arts Centre/Riverside Gallery in West London (which overlooks the river Thames). The exhibition is being supported by the Arts Council England, and it’s free to attend. At the moment, visitors are not required to book.

Cutlery has been used for thousands of years and the format has never changed, since it was first introduced. The exhibition aims to look at the different ways in which cutlery can be used, whilst imagining and presenting new alternatives. “This has been a wonderful project. It’s given me the opportunity to explore a different area of work, and experiment with different ideas,” said Farah.
