Estrella Galicia Wins A Nationwide Listing With Sainsbury’s.

Estrella Galicia has launched into Sainsbury’s with new, sustainable packaging – that is estimated to cut their carbon footprint by 10,000 tons of CO2 each year.

The packaging features FSC-certified paper labels, and 100% recyclable cardboard packaging. The listing with Sainsbury’s aims to showcase Estrella Galicia’s new visual brand identity.

Premium Spanish beer brand, Estrella Galicia’s new sustainability measures includes a 12% reduction in bottle glass (preventing almost 10,000 tons of waste during the production process each year), and the use of FSC-certified paper for all labels. The cardboard packaging is 100% recyclable, and it’s created from cardboard waste generated in the brewery.

“We’re pleased to bring this sustainable product to market, and to launch our new visual brand identity through our nationwide listing with Sainsbury’s. We’re aligned with Sainsbury’s ‘Plan for Better,’ and we believe that our sustainability credentials, such as being a Carbon Neutral organisation, will resonate with the Sainsbury’s customer,” said Estrella Galicia’s UK & Ireland Director, Mark Johnson.

“Our new, modernised look and feel will create a better shelf standout. We’ve created a more cohesive brand identity for the consumer, increasing our brand awareness, and easing the consumer journey to purchase,” added Mark.

Estrella Galicia Cerveza Lager is now available to purchase in 4x330ml packs, and 660ml bottles in 336 Sainsbury’s stores nationwide.

Estrella Galicia is the flagship beer brand of Hijos de Rivera, a Spanish production and distribution company with a history spanning over 115 years, which is present in over 50 countries around the world. Hijos de Rivera has a wide-ranging product portfolio, but it’s also a national operator in Spain for the distribution of internationally prestigious brands.

The company’s growth is above average for the sector, – doubling its turnover in the last five years, with its products achieving solid positioning in the Spanish market, as well as in international markets, such as in Brazil, Germany, and in the UK. Estrella Galicia is distributed in the UK by Greene King Brewing and Brands, and in Ireland by Carlow Brewing.

In 2020, Estrella Galicia’s parent brand, Hijos de Rivera, launched a carbonic gas recovery plant at the brewery. This allows them to recover the gas generated during the fermentation of the beer, and reuse it at the various different stages of the production process. Thus, Hijos de Rivera has managed to increase circularity in its own process, and reduce its Scope 3 Carbon Footprint.

That same year, Hijos de Rivera strengthened its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, through the start-up of a photovoltaic plant consisting of 977 solar panels, – occupying an area of 8,000 m2 on the deck of its brewery, and with a power of 415 kWp, – allowing them to self-generate electricity of renewable origin in their own factory.

In addition to this, Hijos de Rivera has also compensated for scope 1 and 2 emissions that it has not been able to avoid, by participating in a project for forest conservation in Brazil. The project aims to protect the rainforest and generate reductions in GHG emissions, by renouncing the conversion of forests into grasslands, in favour of the conservation of the tropical forest, whilst maintaining existing carbon reserves.

In April 2021, Corporación Hijos de Rivera signed up to the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative, which since 2000, – has been promoting the private sector’s commitment to ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour regulations, the environment, and the fight against corruption.
