Rho: Luxury Loungewear That Prioritises People And The Planet

Rho Organic Loungewear was launched by Elena Ferrara and Hannah Mayfield in 2020. It’s an ethical, luxury loungewear brand that prioritises people and the planet.

Rho started when the brand’s Co-Founder Hannah Mayfield bought a hand-printed kaftan in Sri Lanka. She loved it so much, that she wanted to wear it in separate pieces as a lounge-wear set.

The first collection was named Chapter One, and £5 from each unit sold was donated to the Oasis Domestic Abuse Service.

The artisanal craft of block printing (which originates in India), the technique used to create the prints in the collection, and the work of Muhammad Yunus (and his vision for a world of social businesses) had a huge impact on the socially-driven business model that rho was created with.

Rho’s latest collection, “Chapter Two,” features four classic lounge-wear shapes with a twist: a cami, a shirt, shorts, trousers, and a new rho staple: a robe. Each piece is named after Hannah and Elena’s grandmothers and mothers. The collection brings with it two new prints: Clay Stripe and Peachy Ginkgo, and it’s available from UK 8-10, to UK 20-22.

The garments have been carefully-designed to ensure the ultimate comfort and durability, whether that’s a cozy night’s sleep, or a slow, easy morning. Made entirely from GOTS-certified organic cotton, and printed with AZO-free dyes to lessen its contribution to chemical and water pollution, the collection is kind to the skin, and to the planet.

Rho’s mission also extends out to their production process. Rho takes great care to ensure that each person involved in the creation off the products (from the organic cotton farmers, to the factory workers, to the skilled artisans) are paid fairly in a safe working environment, with job security.

“When designing our second collection, we knew that we wanted to tweak and improve our core staple pieces to allow women to mix and match our pieces in a way that makes them feel comfortable. With Chapter Two, we’re thrilled to be able to offer new ways to wear rho, with the introduction of our new robe, our two new prints, and our expanded size range,” said Elena Ferrara.

“Our belief that everyone deserves a safe night’s sleep drives everything we do at rho. In releasing Chapter Two, we’re proud to be a part of the growing movement of brands that are creating change, by offering something for those who want to purchase responsibly, and have a positive impact,” said Hannah Mayfield.

Hannah and Elena met at school. They’ve been friends for almost twenty years. Prior to launching Rho, Elena worked in fashion design, and Hannah worked in fashion buying for large high street retailers.

The combination of Hannah having a mind for numbers, and Elena having the perfect eye for design and branding – made the duo a perfect team from the start.

Since launching, Rho has been featured in various publications, including The Guardian, Stylist, Good Housekeeping, and Condé Nast Traveller to name a few. They’re also proud to be stocked on Social Supermarket and Slow Co.
