Meat Alternative Heura Closed Q1 2022 With A €14.7M Turnover

Heura (the Spanish plant-based meat alternative brand) finished Q1 2022 with a staggering €14.7M turnover, sparing more than a million animal lives this year so far.

Heura (who we first reported on back in October 2020) has entered over 1,500 new retail stores, including Ahorramás in Spain, Ocado in the UK, Migros in Switzerland, Carrefour in Italy, E.Leclerc, Intermarché, Super U in France, and more.

Founded in 2017 by food activists Marc Coloma and Bernat Añaños, the brand grew its team from 100 to 165 employees in the UK, France, Italy and Spain.

The current food system is broken, but we are seeing the power we all have to accelerate change. We aren’t making animal meat alternatives, but successors – foods that are delicious, nutritionally superior, and more sustainable. We have a clear road map for 2022 growth focused on expanding the plant-based category across Europe, and we’re committed to providing better food options to people all over the world,” said Heura’s Co Founder and CEO, Marc Coloma.

As a company that’s rooted in activism, Heura is also proud of the positive impact it’s had on both the environment, and animal welfare. Over the past six months, when compared to traditional proteins, the company estimates that it has saved approximately: the equivalent of 22 Olympic-sized pools of water, the CO2 equivalent of more than 18,500 flights from Madrid to London, and more than 509,000 chickens, pigs, and cows lives have been spared, as well.

Earlier in 2022, Heura raised more than €4M in just 12 hours through its ‘Equity for Good Rebels’ crowdfunding campaign, which saw more than 4,500 people from across the world join together to accelerate the plant-protein transition.

Breaking traditional investor norms, approximately half of the participants were between the ages of 18 – 35 years old, and 42% identified as women.

Heura entered the UK market in 2020, and has since launched its ‘plant-based’ chicken at two of the leading retailers for healthy and sustainable eating — The Vegan Kind and Planet Organic.
