Launched In 2021, Tessie Makes Sustainable Pyjamas For Women

“Style, comfort, and sleep.” Launched in Oct. 2021 by Georgina Ryan, Tessie creates award-winning, sustainable women’s pyjamas. The products are made in the UK.

Tessie’s pyjamas are made with natural fabrics (for instance, the Tencel in their Poppy Dog Print Pyjamas are made from FSC-certified forests).

Also, instead of using plastic to make their buttons, Tessie makes Corozo buttons (which are also known as vegetal ivory, which comes from the nut of Tagua palm trees) as an alternative. In other words, they’re biodegradable.

The name ‘Tessie’ comes from Georgina’s childhood dog, Tess; an Airedale Terrier with a fluffy beard, and little paws. Her current Airedale, Poppy, is the inspiration behind her first print design, the Poppy Dog Print Pyjamas.

“It made more sense for us to manufacture our sleepwear in Britain, instead of trying to source a factory in India, China, or Europe. One massive plus for us making our clothes in the UK, is that it keeps skills in the country, workers are given fair and ethical wages, we’re paying back into the economy, and it keeps our carbon footprint low,” said Georgina.

Throughout her career, Georgina has worked in many different areas of the retail industry, from the shop floor, to head office. Although this retail background has helped with the business, it was a leap of faith during the COVID-19 pandemic that got the brand to where it is today. “I love sleep, and I’m a bit of a pyjama-holic, so it felt like a natural fit to start a women’s nightwear brand,” says Georgina.

Since launching, Tessie has been featured in Surrey Life, Hampshire Life, Pick Me Up Magazine (twice), and more recently, The Christmas Magazine 2022 in the ‘Gifts for Her’ section, as well as being included in the Kensington Mum’s Sustainability Blog 2022. The brand also made it through to the final five for the Muddy Stilettos award category, ‘Best Sustainable Business in Leicestershire and Rutland’ in June this year.
