Sue Pryke: Beautifully Bespoke, Handmade Porcelain Tableware

Based out in a rural studio in South Leicestershire, Sue Pryke makes beautifully handmade porcelain tableware, using an industrial practice called slip casting.

Liquid clay is poured into moulds, and it’s kept the outside unglazed, before being polished and glazed inside, to create a contrast between the matt and the gloss surfaces.

Founder Sue graduated from a Masters in Ceramics from the Royal College of Art in 1994. She set up her business the same year, with funding from the Prince’s Youth Business Trust.

Sue went on to work as a designer for the likes of Ikea, Virgin Atlantics and Marks & Spencers, and she taught several degree courses, as well as heading up the Ceramics and Glass course at DeMontfort University for a decade.

In 2019, Sue was a co-judge on the Great Pottery Throwdown with Keith Brymer Jones on Channel 4.

“I grew up in the east of England. The Fenland with the flat landscape and the big skies has impacted the muted palette I use, and the quiet nature of the wares I produce. The pared back designs can be attributed to working with the Swedish brand Ikea, for over 25 years,” said Sue.

Sue’s clients include The Conran Shop, Daylesford, The Farmyard at the Newt in Somerset, The Stratford Hotel and Brasserie, and the Rothay Manor Hotel to name just a few.
