Koua Studio: Championing Change (Through Recycled Textiles).

Koua Studio: a textile brand – Founded by Erika Alvarez. Koua Studio makes recycled, organic, and deluxe textiles – with a positive environmental/social impact.

Launched in 2021, Koua Studio advocates creativity, innovation, and tradition, by uniting fashion designers with Mexican artisans.

The goal of the project is to promote the cultural heritage of the Mexican people, by preserving their traditional techniques and cultural practices, as well as other social benefits, including poverty reduction through job creation, and female empowerment. The textiles used are made from worn garments and dead-stock – saving them from landfill.

I want to make an impact on my people’s lives, especially with women who are disadvantaged. I want to contribute to slowing down the fast fashion wave by connecting designers with a beautiful and transparent production process, encouraging them to use our textiles for their collections,” said Erika.

Erika launched her business in response to the climate and biodiversity crises’ highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Born and raised in Mexico City, she majored in Business Administration, before arriving in London in 2012 aged 25. She quit her comfortable and stable job in telecommunications, to pursue her dream in Fashion.

Erika went on to study a Master’s degree in International Fashion Marketing at the British School of Fashion in London, and right after finishing it, she took on four internships.

However, despite her wealth of experience in the fashion industry, she was rejected from multiple jobs she was applying for at the time, so she decided to go back to Mexico to start her own project, before returning to London a year later – to turn her dreams into reality, which so far, has gone very well.

Congratulations, Erika.
