Lucy Rout Appeared On Dragons Den, With Her Business – Tabuu

Dragons Den: a 28-year-old cancer survivor (Lucy Rout) was offered a triple-dragon £50k investment for her business Tabuu, and a full-time job with Peter Jones.

One year ago this month (in January 2022), we featured Lucy Rout and Tabuu for the first time. One year later, and Peter Jones, Sara Davies, and Touker Suleyman – offered to invest in the stylish pill case business.

On Dragons’ Den, Lucy explained how her digestive system was reconstructed to remove a rare pancreatic cancer at the age of 25. Unfortunately, she was left with a disability that meant that she would need to take medication every time she eats – for the rest of her life.

It was this journey that led her to discover that there were no stylish and durable pill cases on the market.

After feeling let down by the lack of products available for people with needs like hers, Lucy designed her own, and she embarked on a mission to remove the stigma surrounding medication – by opening up the conversation. To date, Tabuu has donated £1 for each item sold its’ to partner Life After Cancer, and the product has been pictured with celebrity supporters such as Love Island’s Dr Alex George.

The case can hold up to six large tablets. It’ll fit in your bag, on your key-ring, and in your pocket (to keep your medication safe whilst you’re on-the-go). The product is made from plastic-free materials (durable food grade stainless steel, to be more specific). It’s fully waterproof, and it comes in four chic colours, including Jet Black, Cosmic Grey, Lavender and Flamingo Pink. Lucy launched the business in September 2021.

With a bachelor’s degree in Business and Management from Durham University, and experience at Unilever and Just Eat, Lucy has developed a sound business know-how, and a strong entrepreneurial acumen. She also has a keen interest in water sports, and she previously spent three months in Greece as a water sports instructor.

“I nearly backed out of the show through fear – both of not being good enough, and of what other people might say. If you’re holding back from chasing after something you feel passionately about because of a lack of self belief or a fear that you’re not good enough, please go out there and try. Three years ago today, I was in a PET scan that would give the doctors the conclusion that I needed the surgery which ultimately started me out on this mission,” said Lucy.

Well done, Lucy.
