Maysama: The Rooibos Antioxidant Serum – That Tackles Ageing

Launched in 2019 and inspired by Korean beauty skin routines, Maysama uses a rooibos antioxidant serum and Red LED Light Therapy to amplify anti-ageing results.

The brand was founded by a science graduate named Beverley May Sanderson.

Beverley (a sufferer of rosacea and sensitive skin) launched the business, because she became passionate about Korean beauty, and rooibos.

“I watched a lot of YouTube videos about Korean Beauty, and the US YouTuber, Gothamista – mentioned that rooibos was one of her favourite skincare ingredients,” said Beverley.

Beverley took Gothamista’s advice: she became obessed with rooibos tea because of its anti-inflammatory qualities (which helped her to manage her rosacea). “Green rooibos is a potent antioxidant, because the flavonoids haven’t been destroyed by oxidation,” said Beverley.

Being a science graduate, Beverley was curious to see what science had to say about rooibos, so she got in touch with the South African Rooibos Council (SARC) to set up a research collaboration/study – to determine whether green rooibos was a true bio-active ingredient that was worthy of cosmetic application.

The results of the research collaboration showed that the rooibos extract IS a potent antioxidant, and a true bio-active ingredient. In fact, it outperformed many of the antioxidants in the study. It was shown to work in harmony with the cell – to reduce oxidative stress, and increase cell survival rates.

Maysama’s first product, the Maysama Green Rooibos Pressed Serum – won two beauty industry awards in its first year, AND it sold out worldwide twice. Since launching, Beverley has extended the range to include: a cleanser, a resurfacing toner, a brightening mask, and many more products in development for this year (2023).
