BrewDog’s James Watt Launches A £5MIL Investment Competition

BrewDog‘s James Watt – has launched a new competition, called ‘The Next Unicorn.’ The competition aims to find, and invest £5MIL into three different companies.

After creating one unicorn already, James Watt is putting up £5million – in search of the next billion-dollar company.

By using a brand new investment model (where members of the public can also back the chosen companies), James’ ‘The Next Unicorn’ – aims to create the next generation of unicorns – to follow in the footsteps of BrewDog, who reached the landmark valuation in 2017.

James has partnered with the world’s largest equity crowdfunding platform, Crowdcube – to receive pitches from a wide range of European entrepreneurs. He’ll then whittle down the entrants – with the help of a carefully-selected panel, including Crowdcube’s CEO Matt Cooper, and Evelyn McDonald, the CEO of Scottish Edge – both of whom helped BrewDog to get started sixteen years ago, back in 2007.

‘The Next Unicorn’ will see James invest £1 million into three firms, with a further £4 million to be unlocked – as the winning companies reach certain milestones.

“Building and growing businesses is a real passion point for me, and I have learnt so much on my journey getting BrewDog to Unicorn status. Given the current economic climate, it has never been more important to support companies, and I can’t wait to share my experience with some of the brightest business minds across Europe,” said James.

The submission window for pitches is opens until Friday 14th April, 2023. Shortlisting and judging will take place over a two-week period, and finalists will be invited to pitch live to James and his panel in London.

The three finalists will then be invited to Vegas, where they’ll receive their funding – at BrewDog’s stunning rooftop bar on Friday 26th May. Following the Vegas announcement, the three-winning businesses will also go live on Crowdcube, too – for the public to invest, also.
