Bibinee Dolls: Championing Diversity (Via Soft Plush Dolls).

Family-run business, Bibinee Dolls – is an early years toy brand that launched at the start of 2023, to fill a gap in the market for soft plush diversity dolls.

The brand aims to empower children to learn, grow, and play, and to love – through representation and inclusion.

The range consists of playful girl and boy dolls (with beautiful black and brown skin tones), a hijab-wearing doll, and a gender-neutral rainbow baby.

And for the children that love to pack their own bag(s) for nursery, there are playful bundle sets, too – made up of a detachable doll, and the softest adjustable rucksack(s).

Bibinee Dolls was set up by Stephanie Mensah.

Stephanie was frustrated that she couldn’t easily source black and brown dolls for new-borns. After conducting some research, she discovered that the plush soft doll market – had a projected revenue of £1.25 billion in the UK alone, yet less than 1% of this number was dedicated to the sale of diversity plush dolls.

The word ‘Bibinee’ is slang in the Ghanaian language, Twi – for ‘black’ (‘bibinii’) – a nod to Stephanie’s heritage, just like the kente/ankara print clothing found on some of the dolls.

“Showing love and appreciation for black and brown skin, hair, features, and culture, will help to build confidence, a sense of identity, and self-love in our young owners. It will also normalise acceptance of all races from early years, and hopefully beyond, whilst also helping to eradicate colourism,” said Stephanie.

But that’s not all. The toys are non-toxic – with NO detachable parts, so there no choking hazards, either.

And, the products are UKCA-marked (meaning that they adhere to conformity with European health, safety, and environmental protection standards), and they’re machine washable.

Bibinee Dolls debuted at the Baby Show at the London Excel – receiving fantastic reviews from traders, and happy parents alike.
