Avallen Spirits: Raising Awareness of Bees, And Their Crucial Role

Avallen Spirits wants to be the world’s most planet-positive spirit. They’re launching a campaign – to raise awareness of the plight of wild bees, on World Bee Day.

Launched in 2019, Avallen Spirits is raising awareness of bees’ crucial role in the pollination process. In fact, bees are an important part of the juicy apples – required to make Avallen’s liquid.

The company is engaging bars and hospitality venues across the UK, to serve a special cocktail for World Bee Day, with £1 from every sale – donated to the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, via the 1% for the Planet initiative.

The campaign is also a part of Avallen’s wider mission to act against the climate crisis, and to inspire positive change – both inside, and outside the drinks industry. Avallen’s calvados is completely natural. It’s made from nothing but apples, water, and time – with no additives, or added sugar. 

The liquid is fresh, fruity, and apple-forward in its flavour profile, and it’s aged in French oak barrels for two years. Avallen is also one of the first spirits to adopt a paper bottle, which is far more robust than glass, and six times lighter.

Since launching, Avallen has been certified by B Lab, and B-Corp – making it one of a visionary set of companies that are committed to social and environmental impact.

The brand has also signed up to the Harpers Sustainability Charter – the first spirit brand to do so. Avallen’s impact-led production methods and eco-friendly packaging (including recycled glass bottles and apple pulp labels) demonstrate the company’s commitment towards giving back more than it takes.

“Every person can help to increase wild bee populations, by simply deadheading flowers to encourage more blooms, or by getting involved in No Mow May. Small steps like this can make a huge difference – as well as drinking sustainable, bee friendly spirits, of course” said Tim Etherington-Judge, one of Avallen’s Founders.

Avallen’s dedication to protecting biodiversity – has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Best Speciality Calvados in the World, and the World’s Best Calvados Design, at the 2020 World Calvados Awards. The brand has also received gold awards, for its label design and launch.

Avallen came to market, thanks to Tim and Steph, who come from the spirits industry.

After forging a career at the world’s biggest spirits company, as well as with small, independent wine and spirits businesses, Steph launched Drinking Out Loud, her own consultancy. She works with some of the world’s most prestigious drinks brands.

Tim has had an extremely successful career in drinks – winning multiple awards as a bartender, and holding the role of global brand ambassador, for a renowned whiskey brand. More recently, he founded Healthy Hospo, the hospitality industry’s leading health and wellness platform.
