From Lock-down To Rum: A Former Pub Owner Has Launched Honeybell: A Premium Spiced-Rum, – Distilled In The UK

A former pub owner has turned his hand to the spiced-rum market. During lockdown, Jay Macdonald decided to create Honeybell, – a premium spiced rum that is distilled in the UK. The rum includes: orange, honey and vanilla.

It all started when Jay began to look for premium rums that were made in the UK, but to his surprise, – he was only able to identify a small handful of brands that were doing this. And so, he decided to get in on the buzz. Made from Molasses, Honeybell’s rum is copper-pot-distilled in small batches, where the spice is then added: with orange, honey and vanilla being used as the core ingredients.

Jay previously owned a pub for four years, but he decided to close the doors a year before COVID, which turned out to be a timely decision, as he later went on to realise just how much heartache and hassle he would have faced, if he’d have kept going with it. Thankfully, instead, he used his newly-found free time to re-evaluate what he wanted to do, but somehow, he ended up re-entering the very industry in which he had just left: the booze market.

Luckily for me, I had left the pub trade a year before lock-down. I can now see the struggle that we would have faced through the last 18 months. Instead, I went back to working as a credit controller whilst I decided on my next project, which turned out to be Honeybell Spiced Rum,” explained Jay.

But he was still affected by the pandemic in his own unique way: it created a delay in the brand’s launch. Yet he fought through, and he overcame this: Honeybell finally launched on the 1st June, 2021. So far, the start-up has already secured a listing on a rapidly-growing online retailer, called The Rum Company, – with several other potential brand-boosting projects in the pipeline.
